The New Economics of Datacenter Efficiency
    Conference
    June 27, 2013
    Marina Mandarin Hotel, Singapore
    Introduction

The New Economics Of Datacenter Efficency

Building And Managing Datacentres In The Cloud Era

Information Technology is a constantly evolving environment and is in a permanent state of change. No technologies are finite and new ideas and concepts are being developed all the time that provide organizations with more speed, power, efficiency and productivity. At the heart of this system is the datacenter, the one place where all systems, regardless of their end-user device or environment, ultimately connect to and in recent years datacenters have been undergoing some radically major changes in design and operations that provide organizations with huge opportunities to gain on the competition, or significant pitfalls that can negatively impact productivity and overall competitiveness if not address and handled correctly.

Not only have IT hardware architectures been undergoing massive change, with the adoption of virtualization within the server, storage and networking platforms which, if done properly, has been proven to create immense value and savings to organizations, but the overall datacenter physical environment is also undergoing some radical architectural changes brought about by the new, far more dense hardware infrastructures that are consuming ever more power and demanding far more intelligent approaches to cooling.

Surrounding all of these changes in the physical attributes of datacenters is the ethereal offering of cloud computing. Adopted by some, rejected by a few but misunderstood by many, cloud computing in terms of both internal and external to the organizations datacenter also offers another approach to procuring and deploying computing resources.

Regardless of where computing power is being sourced from today or in the future all organizations need to undertake a strategic review of the current environment, plan for what the future state should look like and begin to take steps to rationalize their IT environment in order to take advantage of these new technology and sourcing options.

This holistic approach needs to take into account:

    • Datacenter physical design
    • Facility management practices
    • Datacenter thermal architecture
    • Network design
    • Server platform options (including virtualization/ private cloud strategies)
    • Efficient storage requirements (and the adoption of storage efficiency technologies)
    • Infrastructure management tools that can also leverage hybrid cloud options
    • Cloud based offerings
