    Event Details
    IDC's Asia/Pacific Internet of Things Conference 2014
Billions of Things: Trillions of Dollars
    Conference
    November 06, 2014
Intercontinental Hotel , Wellington, New Zealand
    Introduction
The Internet of Things (IoT) represents a new construct in an ICT world. It is this new market proposition that is occupying the collective minds of IT vendors, service providers, and systems integrators as it represents huge potential for new streams of revenue and new customers. For vendors and customers alike, the opportunities are endless, however, in today's world, relatively few people or companies know how to identify and capitalize on the potential opportunities.

During this event, IDC will attempt to "demystify" the Internet of Things by exploring the consumer, government and enterprise solutions that will drive the industry forward. In addition, we will examine how companies today are leveraging the power of IoT to generate new business models and opportunities. While many of these companies are traditional industry players that are looking to drive operational efficiencies, we will also examine the new industry entrants that are utilizing IoT solutions to aggressively enter new industries and market segments. IDC will leverage its extensive quantitative and qualitative Internet of Things research to illustrate the market trends and opportunities.

    Highlights from our analysis include:

    1. IDC defines IoT as a network of uniquely identifiable “things” that communicate without human interaction using IP connectivity. The ecosystem components that support IoT solutions include devices, connectivity, platforms, applications, analytics, security and professional services.

    2. IDC expects global IoT revenues to mushroom from $2.3 trillion in 2014 to nearly $7.1 trillion by 2020, with the industry in Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ) to grow from over $600 million to $2.4 trillion during the same period.

    3. IDC estimates that the IoT installed base will be grow from 11.4 billion in 2014 to 28.1 billion in 2020, with 8.8 billion of those coming from APeJ. In APeJ, the Industrial IoT and non-wearable Consumer IoT install units will experience a CAGR of 23.3% through 2020, while the consumer wearable install units will grow at 32.9% over that period of time. The use of consumer wearables in enterprise solutions will contribute to the higher growth rate.

    4. Consumer wearables will start to be leveraged by enterprises in 2015. The combination of declining device costs with increased capabilities will allow enterprises to leverage these devices for track user location for security, health and safety and logistics solutions as well as capture user diagnostics for healthcare and pharmaceutical solutions.

One thing is for certain, the Internet of Things is fast becoming a reality and will change the way we work and live in the future. The technologic components that underpin IoT solutions are readily available today – and with further understanding of the capabilities and limitations – enterprises will be able to leverage them to drive operational excellence, business transformation and competitive differentiation that will ensure success and growth in an increasingly competitive future.
